Hey i'm Grant,

I’ve been passionate about photography for as long as I can remember. Coming from a creative and artistic family my parents encourage creativity, be it a musical instrument, drawing or just expressing ourselves anyway artistically.

When I was 5 my mother started giving me a camera once a month on the weekend to see what photos I would take. It was a Kodak Instamatic 33 with 126 cartridge film. I’d get 24 shots to leave my mark.

I went on to study photography in school and at the time I was right into surfing. I was working part time in a surfboard factory and there was always someone in the industry be it media or pro surfer around.

I was lucky and got to meet a lot of the right people.

One in particular was Andrew Kidman from Tracks magazine. Got speaking to him at a party and we were quick to be on the topic of photography and he filed my fire and convinced me to buy a cheap Minolta 110 underwater camera.

I was out all the time shooting getting 1-2 good shots, sometimes nothing but was able to start getting a few published.

By this time I was living in North Avalon with surfboard shaper Matt Haymes and world no. 2 surfer Mick Campbell. Some of the best days of my life and the life skills I learned in that time was priceless. Very fond memories of the mid to late 90’s on the Northern Beaches.

I went on to start an apprenticeship in carpentry and after 1 year I changed to printing and graphic arts. In this time I had bought my first house with my then partner and a mortgage plus apprentice wages meant there was no money for new equipment, new boards and sold bikes and went a long time with no motorcycle.

Fast forward about 10 years and I had got back into motocross and had an accident requiring shoulder surgery. So during the recovery time I picked the camera back up and discovered the flame inside never went out. I was getting out to the track with my mates taking action shots and at the time this Facebook thing was beginning to take off. I started a photography page called FiftySix Clix and it just kind of snowballed. No one knew who I was but found out everyone was talking about me. Social media was a big help in getting noticed.

I started submitting images to publications and would get one or two here and there printed. Then I started getting contacted to shoot races or do shoots. Now another 10-15 years forward I’ve been blessed to shoot all over Australia following the Motocross and Supercross series, AMA in the United States, Motocross of Nations, Monster Energy Cup and had the chance to hang out with my hero’s growing up in surfing, skateboarding, music and motocross.

I don’t ever want to put the camera down. It’s a hobby that turned into so much more. It has given me so many amazing opportunities by staying true to myself and chasing my dreams. I honestly don’t think anyone will ever know everything about photography, you’re always learning, always creating, it’s an art form and craft and I want to continue creating.

Thanks.
